I know that I should have taken a "before photo" but sometimes when I get into the zone I forget such things. This skirt is from Goodwill and and was way too big for me (well it fit me round the low hips but not in a flattering way). So..I worked a pleat into the front to draw in the extra fabric and top stitched it most of the way down the length of the skirt.

Now high-waisted I finished with a complementary topstitch around the side pockets. All in all about 15 minutes of sewing and entirely worth it!

This is the first of several antique kimonos that I've been meaning to photograph. I'm quite obsessed with kimono silks and always regret not spending more time frequenting flea markets whilst living in Japan, as I imagine I could have had quite a stockpile if I'd been a bit more focused. I CANNOT WAIT for the revival of Funny Girl that's scheduled to hit Broadway in 2012. Funny Girl was the first musical I fell head over heels with as a girl (followed shortly by Oklahoma). These songs NEVER grow old. They are perfect, and Babs is perfect.

I do hope they find new talent for the lead, though. These rumors about Lea Michele in the role of Fanny Brice are a little disappointing. I'm sure she'd be fine but I feel like her version of Don't Rain on My Parade couldn't be more Auto-tuned! Hopefully they find someone more in the vein of BS. Either way I'm seeing it and I'm certain it will be perfectly amazing.

It's a little bit Babs...in a good way.

I sported this at a recent fashion week event (see here) cinched with a belt from Goodwill and paired with some Unisa wedges. I heartily believe style needs very little money.

Last week I made my first batch of Magnolia Bakery's Banana 'Nilla Wafer Pudding. I am not sure that I can EVER allow myself to make another batch. If obsession has a taste surely it's akin to this pudding! I of course didn't think to halve the recipe and ended up with enough to feed a party of twenty. And can I tell you who consumed eighty-five percent of the decadence? Yours truly. So wrong but so very right. I swear I'm doing sit-ups as I type to make up for it. Make it (or buy it), eat it, love it...then jog or something.

Oh where oh where do the hours go?

Since moving back to New York, my days have started to swallow me up. They spit me back out, with sore feet, a weary mind, and a bit of a crestfallen heart. After long evenings of work and an endless commute, I return home to neglect my projects in favor of cozying up and recharging; and while this is important, I refuse to abdicate my creativity just yet! I am determined to cultivate my own time in a wiser way. It's time to get back to my passions and pursuits! My first mini-project?....Olives!!

My local supermarket sells fresh, uncured olives in their produce section. Having never seen them in such an un-processed state, I grabbed a handful of the greens the first time I found them. Upon getting them home I gave them a quick rinse and eagerly bit into one, sure to get my olive fix for the day. Hmmm. Not recommended. It tasted, as my roommate said, like what one would imagine biting into a rose stem would taste like, bitter and grassy. It seems that curing them, leeches this bitterness out of the olives rendering them edible. How olive ignorant was I!

After a quick google, I now have my first test-batch of olives curing as I type.

There are quite a few methods for curing, endless ways to season, and it only takes a few weeks. I am beginning with the simple water curing method as to try the olives in their purest form. Have a read of this Wikihow article if you are interested in trying this project for yourself!
